PHASE Nepal is a not for profit NGO established in 2006 by a group of development professionals dedicated to supporting poor communities in Humla, Bajura, Mugu, Gorkha, Dhading, Chitwan, Nuwakot, Kathmandu, and Sindhupalchok districts of Nepal. For the last 13 years, PHASE Nepal has been improving the livelihoods of rural people by providing immediate support through health care and education services, and create opportunities in communities for self-empowerment. Currently, PHASE Nepal’s projects on health, education, livelihoods, and reconstruction are funded by a number of institutional and individual donors from different countries. PHASE has around 200 staff working for different projects.
PHASE Nepal is currently looking for suitable candidates for the following two positions :

1.Statistician/ Data Management Lead

We are currently seeking qualified and energetic professionals for Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) and the University of Sheffield funded GCRF NGO Secondary Data Analysis Research Project: “Determinants of health in rural Nepal: Utilizing PHASE Nepal data to investigate social inequalities in health and health care amongst under-5s.” The research project’s objective is to create new academic knowledge on the relationship between various forms of inequalities for major determinants of health, utilization of health care services, and treatment adherence in common childhood illness.

The overall purpose of following positions is to compile, digitize and analyze existing paper-based patient records of Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illness (IMNCI) to generate an important new digitized dataset (over the last 5years) from 25 PHASE working health centres in Humla, Mugu, Bajura, Sindhupalchok and Gorkha districts of Nepal. This will help the Research Department at PHASE Nepal to pursue further research questions and address a series of research questions related to uses of health services based on Nepal’s various socio-economic and geographical diversities.

Position: Statistician/ Data Management Lead

Duty Station: Central Office, Kathmandu with occasional project site visits

Job Description
The Statistician/ Data Management lead will play a leading role and will be responsible for training, supervising, monitoring and overall data management of the research. S/he must take a pro-active role in data compiling, digitizing, coordinating, and processing of overall research data to make high quality inferential statistical analysis. Following are the key job-related requirements for the position but are not limited to:

    1. • In cooperation with PHASE Nepal research team, identify the appropriate tool for the digitisation of data
    1. • Develop digital data collection tool for digitizing paper-based secondary data of IMNCI from 25 health centers.
    1. • Train, supervise, and monitor Research officers and Data entry person in developing a database for the research.
    1. • Coordinate and support Research department and Research Investigators at PHASE Nepal for statistical analysis of research data.
    1. • Support Research department in developing a strong database and information system of PHASE Nepal and build the capacity of PHASE Nepal.
    • Liaise between the PHASE Nepal team and the University of Sheffield researchers.


    1. • Masters in Bio statistics/Statistics (Ph.D. Preferred) or relevant discipline
    1. • Expert on data inputting, data cleaning and data analysis
    1. • Good command over-analytical software (SPSS, STATA, R)
    1. • Good command over data entry software KOBO, CSPro, & other ODK tools
    1. • Knowledge of a programming language for Python, Ruby, XIsform, etc will be an asset
    1. • Experience in using python or R for analysis and predictions.
    1. • Experience in producing a dashboard for data visualization and predictions.
    1. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
    1. • Strong problem-solving and attention to detail

2. Project Manager

The Project manager will be responsible for the overall management of the project such as planning, implementation, monitoring, staff management, and other project activities. S/he must take a pro-active role in coordination, rapport building with Rural Municipality, local communities and also with district-level stakeholders.
S/He will be reporting to the Programme Manager.
Position: Project Manager
Duty Station: Central Office, Kathmandu with 70% visit to PHASE Nepal’s Project Districts
Required Number: 1 (One)

    1. • Master’s Degree in any discipline with Bachelors of Science in Agriculture (B.Sc.Ag)
      Minimum of 5 years of professional work experience in managing livelihood projects at managerial level with a demonstrable record of accomplishment of best performance.
    1. • Excellent project management skills plus strong in planning and financial management (proficient in budgeting and using MS- Office)
    1. • Should be able to generate high quality technical as well as narrative reports of the project activities independently.
    1. • Should be open-minded, presentable, creative and innovative with decision making and problem-solving.
    1. • Proven track record of leading the team in achieving the target of the project
    1. • Willingness and fitness to travel remote areas
    • Fluency in both speaking and written English/Nepali language

Salary and Benefits:

3.  Research Officer

Duration:   12 months (starting December 1, 2019)
Reporting:  Research Lead
Salary        : Up to Gross 70,000/month
Job Summary:
PHASE Nepal has received a research grant from the CGIAR Research Program on Maize (CRP MAIZE), led by the
International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT). The project aims to improve understanding of the
relationship between male labor out-migration and household gender dynamics, and how it implies to the maize-
based farming systems(MGM Nexus) in Nepal. The study adopts a mixed research design that combines in-depth semi-
structured qualitative interviews, household surveys, and focus group discussions for primary data collection. The study
also needs to collect secondary data for trend analysis of migration and maize production in the study sites. The study
plans to collect data from the three rural municipalities: one each from the Terai, hills, and mountains.

DELIVERABLE GOALS: Main Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities
Provide overall support in planning, organizing, and conducting research in MGM nexus.
• Monitoring and supervision of the project activities in coordination with project members.
• Support in scientific literature search, critical review and produce a state-of-art knowledge on the MGM nexus.
• Develop and participate actively in the development of field research plans.
• Support in the development of qualitative and quantitative research instruments, including structured surveys,
semi-structured interviews, and focus group discussion for primary data collection.
• Help explore, identify and collect data from the secondary sources.
• Provide training support to interviewers, enumerators, facilitators, and note-takers, employed for qualitative and
quantitative data collection.
• Clean, consolidate and prepare the dataset for quantitative data analysis and help in coding for qualitative data.
• Discuss findings with other personnel to evaluate the validity of the findings.
• Prepare periodic reports to summarize project progress and help write up for publication, presentation, or for the
use in further applied or theoretical research activities.

We are seeking candidates with the following qualification, skills, and attitudes:
• Master’s Degree in Agriculture or Natural Resource Management or Rural Development or in the related field.
• Minimum 2 years of relevant professional experience working on research management, especially in the field of
agriculture and rural development.
• Demonstrated knowledge of data collection methods like in-depth interviews, survey designs, and group
• Strong analytical skills and experience in conducting literature reviews.
• Good understanding of statistical data analysis packages – SPSS, STATA.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
• Systematic, well organized, dependable and with a high degree of initiative and sense of responsibility.
• Knowledge of KoBoTool Box or similar data collection software is an advantage
• Prior experience of gender equality and social inclusion issues in agriculture, rural development, and natural
resource management is an asset.
• Experience in scientific writing and publication of articles in the journals is an asset.
